Our Best Answer: What is a Pell Grant?

Pell Grants

A Pell Grant is a post-secondary, federal grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Part-time students can be eligible for Pell. This federally funded grant is based on a formula that takes into account your EFC (Expected Family Contribution), cost of attendance and enrollment status (full- or part-time). You may apply by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The U.S. Congress sets the maximum Federal Pell grant awards annually. For 2023-2024 academic year, the Federal Pell Grant range is from $800 to $7,395. If you're not eligible for a federal Pell Grant, you may be eligible for other federal aid.

The amount of Federal Pell Grant funds you may receive over your lifetime is limited by federal law to be the equivalent of 6 years (12 semesters) of Pell Grant aid. To see your Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) percentage, you can log on to the office of Federal Student Aid using your FSA ID to view your LEU on your account dashboard.
