Our Best Answer: What is verification and how long will it take?

Verification

Verification is a process required by the U.S. Dept. of Education to confirm the information you provided on your FAFSA.

If you are selected for verification, the College is required to obtain and compare information reported on your FAFSA form to your family's IRS tax return transcript and to collect other documents regarding the family household. The documents are available in Student Forms through CUNYfirst account for a list of needed documents.

Federal aid cannot be disbursed to your account until the verification process is complete. The sooner you verify your information, the sooner you?ll be able to receive financial aid if you are eligible.

The priority deadlines to submit documents for verification can be found on the Financial Aid website.

Who Gets Selected: There are several reasons for being selected for verification. The most common are:

  • the FAFSA application has incomplete data
  • there appear to be discrepancies in the data on the FAFSA application
  • the FAFSA application contains estimated or assumed information
